Okay, when it comes to Cisco cables, most of us are left feeling a little inadequate. After all, Cisco sells more than xxxxx different cables – from xxxx to xxxxxxxx. So, how to make sense of a spaghetti bowl choice of protocols, pin outs, null modems, xxxxxxx and xxxxx?

The good news is that the majority of Cisco’s cables are of the following types.

Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) is a cable that has 4 pairs of wires twisted inside it to xxxxxx interference. UTP cables are connected using RJ-45 connectors that have 8 connected that is used for internetworking and is classified as Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) and Data Communication Equipment.

UTP cables are used in many configurations and for different purposes, to form an internetwork. Applications of UTP include:

Serial transmission
Integrated Service Digital network (ISDN) connections
Console connections
Modular and fixed interfaces

These configurations and applications are as follows:

Straight-Thru Cable A straight through cable is the standard network cable connection and is used to connect destination computers through internetworking device. Specifically, you can use it to connect xxxxxx switch.

Crossover Cable In a crossover cable, the standard RJ-45 cable between the source and destination computers. A crossover cable is used to connect the following :

Two computers
Two hubs
A hub to a switch
A cable modem to a router
Two router interfaces

Rollover Cable These Cisco proprietary cables are used to connect to a router or switch console port. In a rollover, xxxxxx 45 connectors are usually present at each end and are used to connect the router and computer. Xxxxxxx end of the cables connects to pin 8 at the other end of the cable, likewise pin 2 connects pin 7 xxxxxx.

Serial Cables All WANS use serial transmission, which passes one bit at a time over a single channel. Cisco xxxxx serial connector for one end of the cable may be EIA/TIAA-232, X21 or others.

ISDN – refers to a standard that defines a digital architecture that can carry integrated xxx using the public switched network. ISDN BRI (Basic Rate Interface) is a two 64kbps.

Choosing the right serial cable requires the following answers:

The first question to answer – is the network DTE or DCE?
Secondly, what signaling standard does the device require?
Lastly, do you need a male or female connector on the cable?

The following list of part numbers contains 90% of the commonly ordered Cisco cables. All cables listed are 10 feet in length.
